Kryptonite (radio edit)

from The Kryptonite EP by Julian Hartwell

/

about

Julian Hartwell returns with a fresh face and bold new direction in Kryptonite - his first entirely self-produced, indie/alternative/experimental pop take on human weakness and the struggle to overcome it.

Featuring the masterful guitar work of Paulito Muse, Kryptonite blends driving beats, playfully thoughtful lyrics, synth layered FX and an ear-worm hook into a decidedly fresh and vocal-driven take on the Julian Hartwell Project. Having lead an instrumental jazz/funk group under the above moniker for years, 2023 sees Julian turning inward to focus his songwriting and composing skills on the one source point of it all - at last and finally, himself.

From the artist:
"The story of this song began at a backyard jam session, prompted by a catchy chord progression and a spontaneous vocal line sung by a friend that would become the hook. Realizing it's ear-worm potential, I've spent the last three years on and off producing it from my home studio, featuring my brother Paulito Muse on guitar, and learning a boatload about production and mixing my own music in the process. I'm excited to embark on this new direction of storytelling through song, making room for new experimentation while creating music that can be more accessible to the everyday listener."

lyrics

"Everybody has
their own Kryptonite
Everybody here’s
just tryin
To get it Right"

Verse 1:
"Straight out the starting line
With the fire inside
You got heart for the win
And there’s strength in your stride

Out here lookin the best
Nothin you can be told
You got faith in your steps
Commanding full control

And so you throw the first punch
All bettin' on that knock out
But deep down there’s a hunch
Growin' to king-sized doubt

Cause there’s somethin’ you forgot
Although ya really tried to hide
Whether ya like it or not,
Yeah you can't deny..."

Hook:
(that) Everybody has
Their own Kryptonite
Every super hero
Sometimes, has themself to Fight

Verse 2:
Nobody's first to come clean
In this game of bein' Right
All caught up in the seems
That’s how we lose our Sight

A script with all the best Lines
In a movie called Self
A million pies in the sky
While humble stays on the Shelf

We strive to be so pure
get everything down pat
But with this Beast at the Door
Seems it ain’t where it’s at

So go on poke a little more
Through my iron man Suit
Think I’m done bein' so sure
(I'm going forward)
Lest I’m caught in the Rearview.."

Bridge:
"Sometimes it’s all you got
Make no Mistake
Time to get the hint
Gotta use all your Strength
Not the way I’d have it
If it was up to me
Gotta know your Weakness
To really break free

Don’t let it get you Down
Fight till the End
Sometimes your weakness
Is your very best Friend
Put on your cape
It’s time for the show
Ya might as well try
Even though we well know ooo-oo..."

Outro:
(that) Everybody has..
their own Kryptonite
Yeah i tell you what, i tell you what
It's that Kryptonite
You know we all got It
Let's be real tonight
Let's just feel, tonight
And lean into that Kryptonite!"
